Little Richard

Discover Macon’s rich musical history, starting with Little Richard, born as Richard Wayne Penniman in 1932 and nicknamed by his family. He began by singing in churches before introducing the world to hits like “Tutti Fruitti,” “Long Tall Sally,” and “Miss Molly.”

Little Richard’s early performances included a memorable show at Ann’s Tic Toc on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Macon, now commemorated with a plaque outside the Tic Toc Room.

Otis Redding

Discover the soulful music legacy of Otis Redding, one of the three revered “Kings of Soul.” Born in Dawson, Georgia, and raised in Macon, his impact on both the local community and the wider music world is unforgettable. Hits like “Try a Little Tenderness” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” still resonate with fans today.

You can learn more about his incredible 26 year life at the Otis Redding Foundation mini museum and admire a striking statue of the singer at Gateway Park, which marks the start of the scenic Ocmulgee River Heritage Trail.

The Allman Brothers

Discover the roots of Southern Rock at The Big House on Vineville Avenue. It’s the former residence of The Allman Brothers (Gregg, Duane, and band), who arrived in Macon in 1969 to work with legendary producer Phil Walden at Capricorn Records. The band honed their unique sound in this very spot, crafting a legacy that continues to inspire musicians today.

The museum showcases the band’s career with posters from their most notable performances, instruments, and even some of their clothing. You may even spot a replica of the poster from their 1975 benefit concert for then-Democratic Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter, a year before he was elected president.

Plus, did you know Oscar-winning actress Cher, who was married to Gregg Allman, used to stay here from time to time? Come see why The Big House is a must-visit for any music lover.

Jason Aldean

Get to know country music star Jason Aldean, who got his start performing at local venues like the VFW and Nashville South in his hometown of Macon. Fun fact: Aldean even used The Big House as a backdrop for one of his album covers!

Despite his fame, he still gives back to his community with occasional benefit concerts. Plus, Nashville South is where Razzy Baily got his start, too. Keep the country music legacy alive with Jason Aldean.

Phil Walden

Meet Phil Walden, the music industry legend who co-founded Capricorn Records with his brother and Frank Fenter in 1969. But Phil’s impact on the industry started a decade earlier when he managed the career of Otis Redding and helped him skyrocket to fame.

Later, he played a pivotal role in propelling the Allman Brothers to the top of the charts. Not just stopping there, Phil worked with other major artists including Kenny Chesney and Widespread Panic.

If you’re curious about Phil Walden’s final resting place, you’ll find him in the historic Rose Hill Cemetery on Riverside Drive. This cemetery is home to not just music legends like the Allman Brothers founder, but also Georgia politicians and Civil War soldiers.
